Acrid is a playable character in Risk of Rain 2.

A macabre, poison-spewing ex-prisoner, Acrid fights with a potent array of damage-over-time effects and self-sustaining melee ability, as well as a mix of long-range and crowd control options for any situation. It also sports the highest base damage stat of any Survivor barring the Heretic.png Heretic, allowing for even greater damage potential.

Acrid's unique ability to inflict Status Poisoned.png Poison or Status Blight.png Blight status effects makes it an incredibly lethal choice when stacking items that inflict additional debuffs.

  • Poison damage is affected by armor and has the nonlethal tag.
  • Poison is a damage-over-time effect, so it cannot proc other effects.

Tips

  • Choosing between Poison and Blight depends a number of factors:
    • Poison deals more damage than a single stack of Blight in all cases (sometimes significantly more due to its proportional damage) and lasts longer, but it cannot be stacked.
      • This makes Blight more useful in multiplayer if more than one player chooses Acrid.
    • Acrid's Poison can't kill on its own, but Blight can.
      • This is made less relevant when holding items that can finish off low-health enemies, such as Tri-Tip Dagger.png Tri-Tip DaggerBgCommon.pngTri-Tip Dagger.pngChance to bleed enemies on hit.
10% (+10% per stack) chance to bleed an enemy for 240% base damage.
and Old Guillotine.png Old GuillotineBgUncommon.pngOld Guillotine.pngInstantly kill low health Elite monsters.
Instantly kill Elite monsters below 13% (+13% per stack) health.
        .
    • The damage from both can be increased with Focus Crystal.png Focus CrystalBgCommon.pngFocus Crystal.pngDeal bonus damage to nearby enemies.
Increase damage to enemies within 13m by 20% (+20% per stack).
      , Armor-Piercing Rounds.png Armor-Piercing RoundsBgCommon.pngArmor-Piercing Rounds.pngDeal extra damage to bosses.

Enemies with 4 or more debuffs are marked for death, increasing damage taken by 50% from all sources for 7 (+7 per stack) seconds.
and Shattering Justice.png Shattering JusticeBgLegendary.pngShattering Justice.pngReduce the armor of enemies after repeatedly striking them.
After hitting an enemy 5 times, reduce their armor by 60 for 8 (+8 per stack) seconds.
      .

When the Tonic wears off, you have a 20% chance to gain a Tonic Affliction, reducing all of your stats by -5% (-5% per stack).
and Shaped Glass.png Shaped GlassBgLunar.pngShaped Glass.pngDouble your damage... BUT halve your health.
Increase base damage by 100% (+100% per stack). Reduce maximum health by 50% (+50% per stack).
, since it uses Acrid's base damage.
  • As the “Regenerative
    [ Regenerative ]
Heal for 10% of your maximum health over 0.5s.
” buff from Vicious Wounds and Ravenous Bite is considered health regeneration, it will be massively amplified by Spinel Tonic.png Spinel TonicBgLunar.pngSpinel Tonic.png60sGain a massive boost to ALL stats. Chance to gain an affliction that reduces ALL stats.
Drink the Tonic, gaining a boost for 20 seconds. Increases damage by +100%. Increases attack speed by +70%. Increases armor by +20. Increases maximum health by +50%. Increases passive health regeneration by +300%. Increases movespeed by +30%.

When the Tonic wears off, you have a 20% chance to gain a Tonic Affliction, reducing all of your stats by -5% (-5% per stack).
. However, this also means that it won't interact with items like Aegis.png AegisBgLegendary.pngAegis.pngHealing past full grants you a temporary barrier.

Store 100% (+100% per stack) of healing as Soul Energy. After your Soul Energy reaches 10% of your maximum health, fire a skull that deals 250% of your Soul Energy as damage.
or Corpsebloom.png CorpsebloomBgLunar.pngCorpsebloom.pngDouble your healing... BUT it's applied over time.
Heal +100% (+100% per stack) more. All healing is applied over time. Can heal for a maximum of 10% (-50% per stack) of your health per second.
    .
  • Vicious Wounds' attack animation can be cancelled and reset by initiating a sprint. This allows Acrid to attack extremely quickly with no items. In Development Thoughts #11 it was noted this behavior will likely get removed.
  • Grabbing Crowbar.png CrowbarsBgCommon.pngCrowbar.pngDeal bonus damage to enemies above 90% health.
Deal +75% (+75% per stack) damage to enemies above 90% health.
and opening battles with Neurotoxin can allow Poison to bring enemies to killing range more easily. However, grabbing any offensive drones and/or other damage over time items can cause problems with this strategy.
  • Poisoning bosses via Neurotoxin and Epidemic and running away while the poison ticks is a great tactic.
  • Acrid does not take any fall damage while using Caustic Leap or Frenzied Leap.
    • The player can use Caustic Leap or Frenzied Leap after falling off the map to avoid taking fall damage.
  • Epidemic gives Acrid great early-game area-of-effect damage. When combined with items such as the Ukulele.png UkuleleBgUncommon.pngUkulele.png...and his music was electric.
25% chance to fire chain lightning for 80% TOTAL damage on up to 3 (+2 per stack) targets within 20m (+2m per stack).
    , Will-o'-the-wisp.png Will-o'-the-wispBgUncommon.pngWill-o'-the-wisp.pngDetonate enemies on kill.
On killing an enemy, spawn a lava pillar in a 12m (+2.4m per stack) radius for 350% (+280% per stack) base damage.
, and Gasoline.png GasolineBgCommon.pngGasoline.pngKilling enemies sets nearby enemies on fire.
Killing an enemy ignites all enemies within 12m (+4m per stack) for 150% base damage. Additionally, enemies burn for 150% (+75% per stack) base damage.
, this lets Acrid easily clear crowds of enemies.
  • Intentionally shooting Epidemic at the floor or walls can reliably hit flying monsters such as Lesser Wisp.png Lesser Wisps.
  • Acrid does not spawn from an Escape Pod, making Acrid unable to unlock Power Plant in a single-player run.

Lore

Theoretically, the true contents of the cell were just a mess of atoms. The structure of the contents in each cell – living, weapon, whatever - was categorized, sequenced, and then turned to juice and cured into solid gems. An incredibly efficient and lossless format.

And yet when the cell containment broke – and emergency protocols re-sequenced that mess of atoms back into the creature known as Acrid – he already knew. Maybe he was somehow conscious, in his juice-gem state. Maybe they injected him with information. Maybe he was connected to their psionic network. Maybe he just made it up.

But he knew – that the strange crustaceans that scrambled his atoms and imprisoned him here, in a place unknown – were panicking. Something had gone wrong, in a world where variables were not allowed.

Something was leaking.

They may have finally imprisoned something that could not be contained.

Trivia

  • The challenge necessary to unlock Acrid, "...To be left alone" is a reference to Acrid's victory screen from the first Risk of Rain, which reads "...And so it left, with a new hunger: to be left alone."
  • Acrid is referred to internally as "Croco."
  • Acrid is commonly known as “Poison Doggo” as an internet meme.
  • Instead of starting in an Escape Pod, Acrid starts asleep on the surface of the planet. During its wake up animation, it is actually vulnerable to enemy attack before the player is given control if its spawn location is particularly unlucky.
  • Acrid originally fell onto Petrichor V, along with the majority of UES Contact Light's cargo, locked inside of a crate that landed atop the area known as Sunken Tomb. It can be presumed that the Void Reavers managed to imprison it in the Void Fields some time between the events of the first two games.
  • Although first looks may presume this, Acrid has been confirmed by the developer Hopoo that it is in fact not a Lemurian.
